Design Kits for Dawn Shopify Themes

These are the two design kits we sell for Shopify stores built on Dawn. The quickest way to judge one is to see this store in it. Open either kit and press its try-on button, and the whole site switches into that look, product pages and cart included. Look around for a while. The change happens just in this browser, and the bar above the header takes you back to our usual look whenever you like.

If you restyle your theme with an AI agent, the first pass usually takes a few minutes. The trouble comes a bit later, when you ask for one more section and the agent makes a fresh set of choices about colour and type that aren't quite the ones it made last time. A store's look shouldn't depend on which prompt got written that day. So each kit writes those choices down in a DESIGN.md that your agent reads before it touches the theme, and ships with a stylesheet for each style and two typefaces under the SIL Open Font License.

We made both kits from redesigns we worked up for this store's own theme. Each had to meet a written standard and pass its checks before a person signed it off for sale, and every text colour passes WCAG 2.2 AA contrast.

Feint gives a store the look of a clean legal pad, navy on white paper, with canary yellow saved for the one band on a page that's meant for the shopper. Cordovan puts it on a partner's desk instead: blue-black ink on bright paper, and leather for the few sections that ought to feel weighty. Press Try it on this store above and the whole site switches into Feint, product pages and cart included. Look around for as long as you like, then switch back from the bar above the header. The change only happens in your browser. The gallery shows Feint on a stock Dawn store too, dressed up as a stationery shop we invented for the screenshots.

We build this store with AI, inside a system we’ve written down for ourselves: every product has a standard it must meet and checks that run before it ships, and a person signs off before anything goes on sale. Feint came out of that system as one of three redesigns we worked up for this store’s own theme. An agent can restyle a theme in a few minutes. Keeping the next new section on the same look is harder, because each request is a fresh set of choices. Feint writes the look down where your agent will read it: the colours, the type, the shape of every button and card, and the rules a new section has to follow.

What it changes in Dawn

Feint restyles all six of Dawn’s colour schemes, so the sections you already have take on the look without being rebuilt. It also styles Dawn’s own buttons, product cards, badges, drop-down menus, accordions, thumbnails and the pop-up that confirms something went into the cart, and the option buttons and prices on a product page follow along. Headings are set in Familjen Grotesk and reading text in Source Serif 4, which comes with its italic.

Up close you’ll notice the details. Outline buttons are drawn as a 2px navy line, cards are edged with a single hairline, and buttons give a little when you press them. We keep the canary to one band a page at most, and the DESIGN.md asks your agent to do the same. Every text colour on all six schemes passes WCAG 2.2 AA contrast (4.5:1 or better).

What’s in the zip

The Feint stylesheet for Dawn.

Familjen Grotesk and Source Serif 4, with Source Serif’s italic, under the SIL Open Font License.

A DESIGN.md file your AI agent reads before it touches the theme. The trouble comes with the next request. Nothing recorded what the agent chose last time, so it chooses again and the store drifts. Feint gives your agent a finished look to work from, written down in its DESIGN.md, with every colour already checked for contrast. It’s also our own design, where most free DESIGN.md files online copy a famous brand.

What do I need? Your theme’s files on your computer and an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, or about ten minutes to install it by hand. If you’d rather never open your theme’s code, Feint isn’t for you, since it installs into the theme’s files and there’s nothing to set up in the theme editor.

Which themes does it work with? Dawn 13 or later. The install prompt checks your theme first and stops if it can’t take the kit. Horizon isn’t supported yet, and we haven’t tested themes built from Dawn’s code, such as Refresh.

Can I install it without an agent? Yes. Copy the files into your theme and add a few lines to its layout, and the kit’s instructions give you the exact lines.

Will it change my products, pages or settings? No. Feint changes how the store looks and leaves your products, pages, navigation and Theme settings as they are, with every section where you put it. It doesn’t add sections to the theme editor, and checkout keeps Shopify’s own look.

Is there a dark mode? No, Feint is ink on paper all the way through.

Can I use it on client stores? Yes, on as many as you like, as part of your work for each client. The kit stays in a client’s store after the job ends, and you don’t need to credit us. The licence only rules out reselling the kit or giving it away.

Does it work with Sidekick or Canvas? We haven’t tested it with either, so we won’t promise it does.

Can I switch it off? Yes. Each product has a written standard to meet and checks that run before it ships, and a person signs off before it goes on sale. Cordovan comes from two of the three redesigns we worked up for our own theme, which is why it has two styles. Your agent gets both palettes and the rules for the leather in one DESIGN.md, so the next section it builds has something to match.

What changes in Dawn

Each style restyles all six of Dawn’s colour schemes, so the sections you already have pick up the look without being rebuilt. It reaches Dawn’s own parts too: buttons, product cards, badges, the drop-down menus, accordions and thumbnails, and the little pop-up that confirms an item went into the cart. Prices and the option buttons on a product page take on the look through the colour schemes. Reading text is Instrument Sans, italic included.

The leather is the boldest thing on the page, so the kit rations it. It has a fine grain, and the DESIGN.md allows it on two or three sections a page, never two in a row. On paper, the main button in each section is oxblood, whichever style you choose. Buttons give a little when pressed, and every text colour on all six schemes passes WCAG 2.2 AA contrast (4.5:1 or better) in both styles.

What’s in the zip

Two stylesheets, one for Oxblood and one for Prussian.

Besley and Instrument Sans (with its italic), under the SIL Open Font License.

A DESIGN.md your AI agent reads before it touches the theme, covering both palettes, the type, where the leather is allowed and how to build a new section that fits.

An install prompt for an AI coding agent such as Claude Code. It asks which style you want and checks your theme can take it, then installs the style and previews it on your own computer. Your live store stays as it is.

A brand book for each style, a web page showing every component on all six colour schemes.

A licence for as many stores as you like, yours and your clients’.

Questions

Can I use both styles? Yes. The licence covers the kit, so Oxblood can go on one store and Prussian on another. A store wears one style at a time, and the install prompt walks you through switching.

Which style should I pick? Try both here first; it’s the quickest way to tell. Oxblood is the warmer and more traditional of the two. Prussian reads cooler, with its blue desk, and keeps oxblood for the seal and the main buttons.

Why buy this if my AI agent can restyle the theme? For one quick change, you might not need it.
